The Gentleman is one of the newer cocktail bars that have cropped up around Newcastle as of recent. This one seems to inject a little bit of class back into Bigg Market. Isn’t Bigg Market coming along nicely now?! The Gentleman is a Cocktail & Live Music Bar. We were lucky enough to be serenaded with music when we were there – lovely!
The Gentleman is far from a “Gentleman’s lounge” or “old boys club”, in fact, they have a ladies night on Wednesdays! It’s all about bringing back the Old English vibes, 1880s style umbrellas, bowler hats and even a penny farthing (can I have a go?!), mixed with the contemporary classics.
Keeping it local, The Gentleman invite local bands to play, tonight was an acoustic act called Unplugged Acoustic with James Hedley. Even just writing this post brings me back to the //NE Music days, a small not-for-profit thing I had going on a few years back. It’s so important to support your local music scene, there’s so much opportunity to do that at Newcastle venues these days!
The Cocktail Project, a local cocktail masterclass company are also associated with The Gentleman and offer a great masterclass package for any event. The Gentleman’s cocktails are pretty cool. I had an apricot Mai Tai which was very aesthetically pleasing with a gemstone stirrer, sugar and a rose.
Andy had the Grilled Halloumi Salad, which he said looked good; “as good as cheese and leaves could look“, and said it was really, really, really (3 reallys!) tasty and possibly one of the nicest halloumi salads that he has ever had. He did make the point though, “that you can’t really “f*ck” up halloumi“. en pointe.
I had the buffalo wings. Quite a daring option, one would say, considering I had a Colgate White skirt on, I requested a bib for protection. As you can see, I enjoyed them very much.
For mains, we went for the Cajun Chicken Skewers and the stuffed vine tomatoes. Well, we didn’t talk to each other, so they must have been good.
After dinner (2 courses for £10) and coffees (not for me, I go loopy), we had the bill and presented with two lovely ‘mystery’ digestifs that was a really nice added touch.
